KARACHI: US Ambassador Cameron Munter on Friday visited the site of the CID building blast to show solidarity with the dead and injured police personnel and condole with bereaved families.
He was accompanied by his spouse Dr Marilyn Wyatt, US Consul General William Martin and acting public affairs officer Andie De Arment.
On his arrival, he was received by Inspector General Sindh Police Wajid Ali Durrani and senior police officials. He went to the site and laid a floral wreath at the martyrs’ memorial inside the CID building and observed a one minute silence as a mark of respect.
He also met with the family members of deceased police officials and also inquired about the health of policemen injured in November 11, 2010 blast.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the United States would continue to support police, law enforcing agencies and the citizens of Pakistan in the war against terrorism.
The US envoy said he was honoured to take part in the memorial inauguration.
The CID officials who died in the blast gave their lives to further the cause of peace and to secure a future for their families and for the citizens of Karachi, Pakistan and for the world, he noted.
“We recognise the accomplishments of the CID and all branches of Sindh Police in the fight against violent extremism. Police are on the front line and fighting extremism and we honour their bravery and their sacrifices,” he observed.
Munter said that Americans applaud the efforts of the CID and honour that more than 1,800 Sindh Police officials have been killed in the line of duty since 1982.
“We offer complete support to Sindh Police, all Pakistanis and law enforcement agencies who are engaged in the daily war against terrorism and against dangerous criminal elements. We wish to remember those who died in this cause and offer condolences to their families whom we had the opportunity to meet today. I think that this is the essence of our partnership and I am proud to be here,” he remarked.
Responding to a question, he said Americans were always willing to help their Pakistani colleagues and law enforcement authorities because they were the people who were on frontline in the fight against terrorism and criminality.
IG Police Wajid Durrani thanked the US Ambassador for visiting the memorial site and for showing solidarity with the CID and Sindh Police. He said it was a good gesture and that he was grateful for the US cooperation in the war against terrorism.
Durrani said police personnel were facing the challenge of terrorism and vowed that they would be successful in this struggle.
